Cross Country
The University School cross country team competed at McCarty Park in West Allis on Friday October 23, 2009 in the Wisconsin Lutheran Sectional of the Division 2 Wisconsin State Cross Country tournament. The course was flatter than many the team had run on during the season, but because of the recent wet weather it was “a rough course” according to USM junior captain Wil Gehl.
The USM girls’ team was able to place in the results for the first time in recent memory. The Wildcats placed 11th with 290 points behind the team leader, Wisconsin Lutheran, which had a total of 50 points.
Senior Susie Carter led the USM girls. Carter finished 39th with a time of 17:30.12. The second USM girl to finish was senior Kelsie Harris who had a time of 18:53.51 and finished in 55th place. Sophomore Piper Meisinger ended in 63rd place. Her time was 19:43.10. Sophomore Maddy Foy was the next USM runner to finish the race. Foy placed 71st with a time of 20:53.52. Her classmate, Colette Cooper finished 78th. Cooper’s time was 26:55.39. The race’s winner was Shorewood junior Emily Bacchuber, who crossed the line at 15:11.89.
The USM boys’ team followed their pre-race strategy. They planned to begin quickly, run together to pull each other along, and keep pace with the expected leaders from Shorewood for as long as they could. Consequently, USM placed 8th out of 13 teams with 226 points. The sectional winner was in fact Shorewood, which had all 5 of its runners finish in the top ten. As a result, Shorewood totaled a mere 27 points.
Individually the team captains Gehl and junior Michael Wheeler finished a second apart. Wheeler came in 22nd with a time of 18:07. Gehl was 23rd at 18:08. Their classmate Ian Cooley was not far behind. He finished 29th with a time of 18:25. Freshman Bradley Schlesinger was 75th at 21:50 and seniors Victor Sobolev and Ben Florsheim pulled each other along to finish 77th and 79th respectively with times of 22:23 and 23:04. Peter Drews of Shorewood finished first at 16:06.9.
The USM runners did not place high enough to move on to state either individually or as a team. As a result, this year’s cross country season came to a close for the Wildcats.
Soccer (submitted by Joseph and Mark Horowitz)
Your University School of Milwaukee men’s soccer team played in the sectional final on Saturday, October 24th against Racine St. Catherine’s. St. Catherine’s was ranked #3 in division 3 in the state and it was clear from the beginning why they ranked so high. They were very fast and highly skilled. Although they had the edge in ball control, we managed to keep the game even through most of the first half. At 32:51, St. Catherine’s Connor Brehm scored on a header to give them a 1-0 lead. For the rest of the first half and almost the entire second half, Racine St. Catherine’s played more defensively and we gradually got more control of the game. Finally, with about two minutes left, Joseph Horowitz took a free kick from the left hand side. Charlie James ran and headed it beautifully past the keeper to tie the game 1-1. No other goals were scored in regulation and we entered overtime. Five minutes into overtime, Racine St. Catherine’s took a corner kick. The ball was sent in, Andrew Stewart got both hands on it but, as a crowd of players from both teams battled in front of the goal, it was knocked out of his hands and kicked in. No foul was called and the game, and our season, ended. University School of Milwaukee was outshot by Racine St. Catherine’s 19-9. Both goalkeepers made three saves.
Despite the disappointment of this loss, USM has had a terrific season. We were undefeated conference champions. We were regional champions. And we made it to the sectional finals, one game away from the state semifinals. Our final record was 17-4-1.
